Lock faceplate

The faceplate is on the edge of the door leaf, surrounding the bolt or covering the lock-case opening. It is not the strike plate on the frame.

Scope: Explains component locations in residential door hardware. Consider the specific construction with the complete lock.

Identifying its location

Schlage's glossary places the faceplate on the door edge, near the latch or deadbolt. First distinguish the leaf edge from the frame, then check component names.

Checking a replacement component

Record plate length and width, end profile, screw-hole locations and bolt opening separately. Matching colour or approximate length does not make it the same component. A front photograph paired with a dimension drawing helps the supplier more than a product name alone.

  • Photograph the entire door edge and a close-up of the plate.
  • Clearly mark measurement units and hole centres.
  • Confirm whether it comes with the lock case or can be purchased separately.

Difference from the strike plate

The faceplate moves with the leaf, while the strike plate is fixed to the frame. State which side's component is required when purchasing, and do not interchange the names.
