Names of the two bores

Cross bore is the main hole through the door face; edge bore or latch bore runs from the door edge to the main hole. Their functions and directions differ, so bore diameter is not a single unique dimension.

Recording existing holes

Photograph the face and edge separately, recording each hole's dimensions, centre position and any old screw holes. Have an installer inspect old holes hidden by cover plates when confirmed safe and practical.

  • Number the main and edge bores separately.
  • State whether holes are regular circles or have been enlarged or repaired.
  • Provide backset and door thickness as well.

Using an installation template

Before drilling, obtain the template for the exact model and version, and confirm print scale and measurement datums. This article helps identify documentation, not universal drilling dimensions. A webpage diagram is not a full-scale template.
