Padlock shackle diameter and opening dimensions

Shackle diameter describes the thickness of the bar passing through the hasp; opening dimensions describe the space available inside the shackle. Both differ from lock body width and should be checked separately.

Scope: Explains parameters using the ISEO Aditus and three-wheel combination-padlock catalogues as examples; letter symbols are not treated as universal rules for every brand.

Opening height 47 mm, width 22 mm, shackle diameter 6.3 mm; body 40 × 37 × 14 mm
Catalogue example: drawn by this site from the manufacturer's catalogue parameters on this page. The dashed box explains opening height and width; the circle shows shackle cross-section. It is not the actual outline or an installation drawing, and the cross-section is enlarged separately.

First distinguish body, shackle and internal space

The Aditus catalogue uses A/B/C for body width, height and thickness, ØD for shackle diameter, and E/F for opening height and width. Reading only “40 mm padlock” can lead to confusing body width with shackle space; a complete record should retain what each dimension measures.

These letters come from this catalogue; other manufacturers may use different markings. For cross-brand comparison, first consult the manufacturer's dimension drawing, then compare the Chinese terminology rather than combining data solely because letters match.

Reading two example specifications

For example, P70040477 has a 40×37×14 mm body, 6.3 mm shackle diameter, 47 mm opening height and 22 mm opening width. These groups of values describe body envelope, bar cross-section and internal space respectively.

Three-wheel combination padlock P0153027B has a 28.5 mm body width, 5 mm shackle diameter, 22.4 mm opening height and 12.4 mm opening width. Its combination mechanism differs from a keyed padlock, but checking a hasp still requires separate consideration of diameter and opening.

What to check when pairing with a hasp

The hasp hole must accommodate the shackle cross-section; the shackle's internal space must accommodate the secured components and their relative positions. With layered hasps, chains or offset staples, comparing a single hole diameter is not enough to establish whether the lock can close.

A longer opening does not automatically mean greater security; dimensions assess geometric fit and do not replace material, construction or tested ratings. Check the manufacturer's drawing and complete hasp shape for the actual site.
