Door hardware surface cleaning

Before cleaning a lock, identify its finish and model instructions and use the corresponding wiping method. Surface cleaning does not replace maintenance of internal mechanisms.

Scope: Based on Schlage's routine surface-cleaning advice. Does not provide a universal disinfectant formula or keyway lubrication method.

Basic routine-cleaning sequence

Schlage recommends wiping surfaces with mild detergent and water, removing residue and promptly drying, and explicitly avoiding direct spraying or soaking hardware. Confirm care methods separately for each finish.

Identify the material before starting

Record the finish name and manufacturer's cleaning requirements. Similar colour does not establish identical coatings. Until confirmed, avoid strong solvents, abrasive tools or self-mixed cleaning solutions.

Handling abnormalities

If coating peels, corrosion appears or operation sticks, photograph and record the location and environment before contacting support. Do not address mechanism faults by adding more cleaning liquid or pouring it into the keyway.
