Connecting function
Schlage describes a spindle as the rod connecting knobs or handles on both sides of a door and driving the lock mechanism. It is distinct from the cylinder that recognises the key.

Information to provide when purchasing
Provide the lock-case model, handle model, door thickness and photographs of the original spindle together. Check its length, cross-section and connection method. The shared name square spindle does not establish interchangeability.
- Ask whether the spindle is supplied with the handle set.
- Confirm overall length and actual insertion length separately with the manufacturer.
- Photograph any notches, locating components or segmented construction on the original.
Describing looseness
Record whether looseness occurs on one or both sides and whether the latch moves when the handle turns, then pass these observations to the installer. Looseness alone does not prove spindle damage; fixings and the complete assembly also require checking.
