Door-lock durability testing

Durability testing checks whether a lock continues to work after repeated operation and specified loads. Test-cycle counts do not directly represent years of service.

Scope: Explains test purpose using BHMA residential lock durability information. Does not claim that any unverified model achieves a particular cycle count.

What durability tests assess

BHMA explains that durability ratings consider function after repeated use and describes cycle tests simulating use through repeated opening and closing. They do not assess appearance alone.

Fields to record when reading a report

Record the test item, model configuration, test basis, cycle conditions and acceptance result. Equal counts with different actions or loads should not be ranked solely by numerical size.

  • Was the complete lock tested or a component?
  • Which actions does a cycle include?
  • What post-test conditions determine a pass?

Why cycles cannot be converted to life

Actual environments, installation conditions and operation differ. Dividing cycle count by daily uses gives only an arithmetic estimate, not a product-life or warranty promise.
