Privacy-function lock

A privacy-function lock provides indoor privacy control, usually locked by an inside button or thumbturn. It does not describe an exterior-door security rating.

Scope: Uses BHMA residential lock-function terminology and does not cover emergency-opening procedures.

Three questions before purchase

Purpose of the function

BHMA lists privacy among common interior functions, using bedrooms and bathrooms as examples and explaining inside locking. The function name describes purpose, not a burglary-resistance grade.

Three questions before purchase

Confirm inside locking, normal unlocking and the manufacturer's emergency procedures. Household members have different needs; check before purchase whether operation is clear and an installer demonstration is needed.

  • Is there an outside status indicator?
  • Does closing the door automatically lock it?
  • How should emergency instructions and accessories be stored?

Avoid confusion when replacing

The same handle design may have passage, privacy or entrance versions. Record the complete function code when ordering. If the door also has a separate lock, describe each function independently rather than inferring complete-door status from one name.
