Lock components

Identify door lock components by their position and function, from cylinders and bolts to handle connectors.

Cylinder escutcheons and protective guards

Escutcheons and protective guards around a cylinder opening can look similar while differing in material, construction, fixing method and compatibility. Selection should distinguish door-face coverage from the specific purpose of a protective device.

Cylinder thumbturns and prepared-shaft interfaces

A companion thumbturn must match the cylinder's prepared-end interface. Grip shape and dimensions describe operating clearance only; they do not independently establish bore, fastening or functional compatibility.

Euro-profile cylinder

A Euro-profile cylinder is a locking-control component in a door-lock system, with a particular external profile and operation by key or thumbturn. It is one cylinder format, not a complete door lock.

Door closer speed, backcheck and delayed action

Closing speed, final latching, backcheck and delayed closing act during different movement phases. They are distinct adjustments and do not mean the closer can hold the door permanently open.

Lock faceplate

The faceplate is on the edge of the door leaf, surrounding the bolt or covering the lock-case opening. It is not the strike plate on the frame.

Latch bolt

A latch bolt usually means a spring-operated bolt with a bevelled face. Schlage's terminology describes it as a component that engages when the door closes.

Handle spindle

The handle spindle passes through the door leaf and connects knobs or handles on both sides to the lock mechanism.

Strike plate

A strike plate is a metal plate fixed to the frame, with an opening to receive the bolt. It differs from the faceplate on the door edge.
